The learner will:
- Incorporate vocabulary into daily use
- Understand, learn, and use new vocabulary
- Develop vocabulary by discussing literary texts that have been read or read aloud
- Use context clues to understand word and sentence meanings
Supportive Practices
The adult will:
- Read appropriate literary text
- Assist students in selecting age and ability-appropriate fiction materials to read
- Use vocabulary daily and throughout different contexts
- Provide opportunities for oral language practice
- Assist students in connecting new vocabulary to prior knowledge
- Use think alouds to share how a fluent reader navigates through literary text
- Explore similarities and differences in words, meanings, and concepts
- Introduce vocabulary from literary text
- Interactively use a vocabulary word wall to teach, reinforce, and encourage the use of new words
- Directly teach increasingly sophisticated words with examples and non-examples
- Use reader response journals
